Two men have been found guilty of gunning down a man on an Opelousas street in 2021 and could face mandatory life sentences.

A jury deliberated nearly two hours Tuesday before convicting Marcus Chenier, 27, of Opelousas, and Jevon Figaro, 26, of Lafayette, of second-degree murder in the killing of Kelly Guidry in January 2021, according to St. Landry Parish District Attorney Chad Pitre.

Prosecutors said Chenier and Figaro, armed with semi-automatic weapons, ambushed Guidry on North Market Street in Opelousas before shooting him several times. Bullet casings matching the guns, as well as flight and phone records of the two men were presented as key evidence during the seven-day trial.

Figaro and Chenier were arrested in April 2021. Chenier was located in Las Vegas with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service. Figaro turned himself in to authorities.

Second-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence. The sentencing date for the men has not been set.

Assistant District Attorney Katie Ryan and Laura Signorelli prosecuted the case.
